It is believed that lord Philip Stanhope the 4^th Earl of Chesterfield, commissioned the first leather settee. He requested a local craftsman to construct a piece of furniture that would allow a gentleman to sit upright in comfort and without wrinkling the garment. The Earl Lord Stanhope at the time was known as a great writer, a great Politician and the trend setter of 1740 s. The sofa design with its distinctive deep buttoning, quilted leather upholstery, equal arm and back height. Detail rolled arms and nail head trim  have made this traditional design transition through the centuries without change. Over the years chesterfields have graced palaces hotels, gentle-mens clubs and  luxurious homes. Today the chesterfield is the still the statement piece of any home.
